The Backstory to the writing of PICKELBALL!
In 2012 my wife Melinda and I were at breakfast with her life long friend Steph and husband Lou at their summer home in Maine. They were telling us about a new game they were playing at their home in Florida that was beginning to emerge in Maine. It was called Pickleball. As they went on about it I came to realize I knew this game from my childhood. In fact, my family had been instrumental in its creation.
When I left Seattle to come east to school, I left all of my childhood behind, including my exposure to early Pickleball, then Picklepong or sometimes simply Pickle.
Extensive research and personal reflection over the next decade brought forth this biographical look at the full story of how Pickleball actually began and my youthful part in it. PICKLEBALL! also offers up a gastronomical Tour de Force which includes recipies for the court side snacks of yester-year and libations for the PICKLEballer with proper I.D.!

I enjoyed every page of this book. Quirky, informative, fun. A spelunk into Mr Smith’s youth as an eyewitness to this super-sport’s roots with a cast of character’s provided by his family that would make a great TV sitcom.

Patrick Smith has done a wonderful job creating a fun personal look at the beginnings of pickleball. I had a chance to read the advanced reader copy and I must admit the Seattle historical accounts and along with his great sense of humor made it time well spent! The beautiful scenic photography and artwork were very impressive. The recipes at the end were a great addition. They brought back great memories…some I really want to try myself. Highly recommended to all pickleball and history enthusiasts.

As a dedicated, shameless addict of this wonderful sport, I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. Patrick does a phenomenal job of recreating his childhood memories with Fathers side of the family in Washington State in the 60s. I now have a new PB story to share with fellow addicts. Look forward to trying new recipes in this book. Chief Seattles speech was a thoughtful ending.

Covering everything from cold-war strategic missile targeting to Elvis to the best ways to make—and enjoy—a gherkin, this delightful book captures something about the essence of the Pacific Northwest of the 1960s. And part of what it captures is the very real roots of this sport that has captivated the nation. Smith is an engaging chronicler. Do check this one out.

What an entertaining and informative read! Mr. Smith not only digresses often, but to the unlikeliest of places…nukes, ferries, Native Americans, inventors are only some of the “asides” the reader is gently steered towards hearing in sometimes hilarious detail, wending along winding often alliterative side trails and bypasses, mostly on sight of the main road, the author’s family history of the game of Pickleball…
